Jorge I. Alvarez, Ph.D. is an associate professor of Neuroimmunology in the Department of Pathobiology at the University of Pennsylvania. He did his Ph.D. with Dr. Judy Teale at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio (UTHSCSA) specializing in neuroimmunology and brain vasculature. Dr. Alvarez continued his postgraduate work at the University of Montreal under the supervision of Dr. Alex Prat. His research program has been built to identify the mechanisms regulating the immune and neurovascular interactions initiating at the level of the CNS barriers and progressing to the perivascular space into the brain parenchyma in neuroinflammatory and neuropsychiatric disorders. His research program is supported by grants from the NIH (NIMH, NINDS, and NCATS), Stanford University (MCHRI), and through collaborative efforts with industry. Dr. Alvarez focuses his mentoring efforts on trainee-centered learning in which rational thinking is stimulated and thus bolsters achievement for both the mentee and the mentor.
